FAQs: Henna

  • Henna is a plant. The scientific name for henna is “lawsonia inermis”. When applied to the skin, henna leaves a rich, reddish-brown/mahogany colored stain on the skin.

  • With proper aftercare, henna stains last one to two weeks, occasionally longer.

  • Keep it on an keep it dry! Thats the simple advice. To be more specific:

    1. It takes 30 minutes to dry - do not smudge the wet henna.

    2. Once it dries, leave the dried henna on the skin for at least 6 hours.

    3. Do not get your henna design wet for 24 hours.

    4. After 6 hours (past can be left on up to 12 hours), then gently scrape the dried henna past off the skin using your hand and/or nails. Do not use water.

    5. The stain will be light and orange upon removal of the paste. Apply “Katie’s Henna Balm” or one of her other aftercare products to the henna stain to moisturize your design. This helps with protection and longevity of the design.

    6. Allow the stain to develop over the next 24 to 48 hours. The design will go from light orange to a rich mahogany color from oxidation.

    7. For longevity, richness, and protection, you must apply “Katie’s henna Balm” to your henna once a day AND before exposure to water or chemicals (like a chlorinated pool).

    8. If you follow these guidelines, your henna will be rich and long lasting, for one to two weeks, and sometimes longer!

  • Henna is an herb with many physical and emotional benefits, including:

    • a naturally cooling effect on the skin

    • nourishes and moisturizes, hair skin and nails

    • provides a calming and relaxing feeling when applied to the skin

    • creates a sense of confidence and empowerment when applied to the skin

    • fosters a sense of mind-body connection

    • naturally creates a sense of connection between people and groups

  • There is no such thing as “black henna”. However, there is a toxic and sometimes deadly chemical product on the market called PPD or “paraphenylenediamine.” On the black market, natural henna is mixed with PPD to create a “chemical cone” or “black henna.” When applied to the skin, this leaves a stain on the skin that is blackish and can cause a contact reaction resulting in chemical burns, scars, skin irritation, or worse. NEVER get anything other than natural henna on your skin and ALWAYS ask your artist if they make their own past. The answer should be “Yes, my henna is natural and I make it myself with henna leaf, sugar, lemon juice, water and essential oil.”Unfortunately, PPD is not outlawed or banned and is readily available at retailers like Wal-mart, Amazon, Hobby Lobby and other popular stores. Stay educated!
